Dáil set to vote on property tax legislation today

New legislation to give effect to the property tax being introduced next year will be voted on in the Dáil today.

New legislation to give effect to the property tax being introduced next year will be voted on in the Dáil today.

Homeowners will only pay a half year of the tax in 2013, but on a full year, it'll average at around €300 per home.

A protest is being held outside the Dáil later to coincide with the vote.

It is being organised by the Campaign Against Household and Water taxes.

Spokesperson Ruth Coppinger says many people will not hand over the money because they simply cannot afford it.

"This is emergency legislation passed within a week of the Budget," she said.

"If the Government had acted this swiftly against the bankers, the speculators and the people, through their skulduggery, brought this economy to ruin, we would not be in the position we're now in.

"But it seems that heaven and earth can be moved to take money away from pensioners, unemployed people and workers in this country."
