Dáil demands proper British inquiry into Finucane murder

09/03/2006 - 07:45:59
The Dáil has unanimously backed a motion calling on the British government to establish a full public inquiry into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

London has set up an inquiry to investigate allegations of security force collusion in the 1989 killing, but it is being held under legislation that allows certain material to be kept secret.

The Finucane family has vowed not to co-operate with any inquiry unless all information is put in the public domain.

Last night, TDs voted unanimously to back this stance.

Speaking during a Dáil debate on the matter, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern said nothing less than "a full, independent, public, judicial inquiry" would be acceptable to the Irish Government.

However, Northern Secretary Peter Hain is continuing to insist that the inquiry being set up by his government will be fully independent and free of political interference.
