Efforts to restrict those under the age of 18 from using sunbeds will be discussed by a Dáil committee today.

The Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will have the opportunity to debate the proposed changes to the Public Health Sunbeds Bill this afternoon.

The bill aims to prevent people under the age of 18 from using a sunbed on a sunbed premises. It will also prohibit the sale or hire of sunbeds to those under 18.

Chairperson of the committee Deputy Jerry Buttimer said: "There is a huge concern about the growth in the rates of skin cancer, particularly in young people and those with fair skin.

"There is a need to ensure that people understand the risks associated with the use of sunbeds."
