A man has been killed after a hit-and-run in Dublin.

The 62-year-old cyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by a car on the Clontarf road at the junction with Howth Road at about 6.30pm yesterday.

He was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The car involved in the collision, described by witnesses as a silver coloured Volkswagen Golf, was driven away from the scene. Gardaí recovered a silver Volkswagen Golf a short time later in Marino. The car has been seized for a technical and forensic examination.

The scene was examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic.

The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out later today.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to the driver of the car to contact them.

They are also appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who observed a silver Volkswagen Golf ( 05 D registered) in the vicinity of Fairview , Clontarf road and Marino area between 6.15pm - 6.45pm to contact the incident room at Clontarf Garda Station on 01-6664800, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
