Record €1.5bn roads investment unveiled

The Government is to spend a record €1.5bn on new roads in 2007, it emerged today.

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said the allocation is the largest single yearly investment in the history of the state.

A total of 673 separate road projects will receive funding: Nine schemes will be completed, seven will begin and 13 will proceed to compulsory order stage.

Mr Cullen said a fund of €21m will also be allocated towards road safety measures such as traffic calming schemes.

The minister said: “The €1.53bn investment on roads will enhance quality of life for people, connect communities and underpin prosperity. Better roads also facilitate greater competitiveness. Business can do business in a more effective way.”
