Almost 200,000 immigrants registered to work last year

02/01/2007 - 07:57:31
Almost 200,000 immigrant workers reportedly entered Ireland last year, making 2006 a record year for inward migration.

Reports this morning say eastern Europeans and Poles in particular continue to make up the bulk of immigrants.

Almost 90,000 Polish nationals were issued with PPS numbers during the year, followed by almost 15,000 Lithuanians, 10,000 Slovakians and more than 7,000 Latvians.

The figures come as two new eastern European countries - Romania and Bulgaria - enjoy their first days as the EU's newest members.

The Government has decided to restrict immigration from these two countries due to the massive wave of arrivals that followed the last EU expansion in 2004.
