Italy raises security following London bombs
08/07/2005 - 09:38:57Italy boosted anti-terrorist measures and officials were meeting to assess security for a second day today following the string of deadly bombings in London.
Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu was set to hold a second round of meetings with security officials in Rome after announcing a general rise in the level of alert yesterday.
Pisanu said protective measures had been taken at Italian sites considered possible targets, with particular attention to British diplomatic installations.
The measures were in addition to surveillance and intelligence measures already elevated in recent months in response to terrorist threats against European targets, he said.
This morning, Carabinieri police with sniffer dogs patrolled outside Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s residence in central Rome.
Berlusconi warned Italy was at risk of an attack and called for “attentive and speedy vigilance”.
