US technology firm to lay off up to 250 workers in Galway

27/06/2006 - 14:14:11
A US technology firm has announced plans to lay off the majority of its workers in Galway as part of a cost-cutting plan.

The 300 workers at the American Power Conversion plant in Ballybrit were informed this morning that up to 250 of them will lose their jobs as a result of the restructuring programme.

The company is planning to retain some support services in Galway and consolidate the remainder of its Irish operations in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Some of the Galway jobs may be relocated to Castlebar, but the majority will be going to lower-cost locations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
