Swedish right-wing group cancels printing of cartoons
10/02/2006 - 10:14:50A Swedish right-wing extremist group today said it had cancelled plans to print its own drawings of the Prophet Mohammed after pressure from the government and security police.
The anti-immigration nationalist party Sweden Democrats had invited people to send in their own drawings of Mohammed in the past week, which they planned to publish in future issues of its internal newspaper as a way to test Sweden’s free speech laws.
But after Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds publicly urged the fringe party to stop the publication – and pressure from security police caused a web host to shut down the party’s web site – party chairman Jimmie Akesson said the drawings would not be printed.
