Blair rejects call to freeze EU rebate


British Prime Minister Tony Blair today turned down a proposal from the Luxembourg presidency of the EU to freeze Britain's European rebate between 2007 and 2013.

It would have cost the UK between €25bn and €30bn, Downing Street claimed.

The proposal was made by Luxembourg premier Jean-Claude Juncker during face-to-face talks in Luxembourg this morning during Mr Blair's diplomatic shuttle mission ahead of this week's crunch EU summit.

Downing Street revealed details of the discussion as Mr Blair headed for Paris for talks with French President Jacques Chirac.
