CSO reports increase in unemployment

Unemployment has increased by almost 11,000 in the last year, taking the rate to 14.3%, new figures revealed today.

Unemployment has increased by almost 11,000 in the last year, taking the rate to 14.3%, new figures revealed today.

There were 304,500 people out of work during the summer from a labour force of 2.1 million, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said.

The report found the unemployment rate had jumped from 13.6% to 14.3% in the 12 months to the end of June.

There was an annual decrease in employment of 2% or 37,800 in the year to the second quarter of 2011, bringing total employment to 1,821,300.

This compares with an annual decrease in employment of 2.9% in the previous quarter and a

decrease of 4.1% in the year to the second quarter of 2010.
