Cowen will issue statement on Fitzpatrick relationship: Greens

10/01/2011 - 19:36:06
The Green Party says the Taoiseach has agreed to issue a comprehensive statement about his dealings with former Anglo Chairman Seán Fitzpatrick.

John Gormley and Brian Cowen spoke by phone this evening after weekend revelations of a game of golf and dinner attended by Mr Cowen and Mr Fitzpatrick weeks before the bank guarantee was announced.

A Green Party spokesperson also said the Taoiseach had agreed to answer detailed questions on the issue when the Dáil returns on Wednesday afternoon.

Since the revelations yesterday, Brian Cowen has been under pressure to discuss the matter.

Fine Gael's Brian Hayes said it "stretches crddibility" that the Taoiseach and Seán Fitzpatrick played golf and dined together for seven hours but never once discussed business or the emerging banking crisis.

Mary Coughlan said "a casual game of golf" was not the time to discuss the affairs Ango Irish Bank and it "was just a matter of him (Brian Cowen) being paired off to play with the man (Seán Fitzpatrick)".
