Cowen: Murphy report is 'truly shocking and disturbing'
28/11/2009 - 13:29:17The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has released a statement on the Murphy Commission report, describing it as "truly shocking and disturbing".
Brian Cowen said the report into the abuse and cover-up of abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese over a 30-year period is "a crushing verdict that the good name and standing of the Church as an institution was placed above the basic safety of children".
He added that, where this was facilitated by servants of the State, it was "a betrayal of trust and a complete abandoning of duty".
Mr Cowen said the Government is committed to a comprehensive programme of reform and development as articulated by Minister Barry Andrews in the wake of the Ryan Report.
