Cowen congratulates new SDLP leader Ritchie

An Taoiseach Brian Cowen has congratulated Margaret Ritchie on her election as SDLP leader.

“In assuming the office of SDLP leader, she follows in one of the most distinguished lines in Irish political history,” said Mr Cowen. “I am sure she will continue that proud tradition into the future.”

The Taoiseach said Ms Ritchie has shown she has the values and the leadership skills that the North needs to build a better future.

“I look forward to working with Margaret as we continue to work together for lasting peace and prosperity throughout Ireland,” he added.

Last night the Taoiseach attended the SDLP conference where he paid tribute to the party’s outgoing leader Mark Durkan.
