Cowen chairing flood response meeting
21/11/2009 - 15:45:51The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is chairing a meeting at the Department of Agriculture to discuss the Government's response to the flooding crisis.
The flooding task force is to coordinate the emergency response at a national level and will hear from Environment Minister John Gormley who has been visiting Cork and is expected to travel to Ballinasloe this afternoon.
Mr Gormley told city and county managers in Cork that the emergency response would not be affected by the economic difficulties.
Members of the Defence Forces have been deployed to Cork, Clonmel, Ennis, Ballinasloe, Galway and Carlow to deal with some of the worst floods ever seen.
A further 300 members of the Defence Forces are on standby should adverse weather worsen flooding.
