Coveney understands why some will vote ‘No’ in referendum
Agriculture Minster Simon Coveney has said he can understand why some people will vote ‘No’ in the upcoming marriage equality referendum.
There is now just one week to go until polls open.
Minister Coveney - who is Fine Gael's Director of Elections for the referendum - has said many voters will have grown up in a traditional setting and feel they want to protect that by voting ‘No’.
However, he added there is nothing that undermines existing families in the extension of marriage rights to same sex couples.
“Many people in Ireland have grown up in a very traditional family setting, with a mother and a father, and they see that as something they want to protect,” said Coveney.
“What I want to say to those people is, there is nothing that undermines traditional families in Ireland like mine (in the referendum). I’m a happily married man with three beautiful daughters – my marriage, my family won’t change whether people vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”
