Coveney due to announce future of Irish troops in Syrian mission

An announcement is due this evening on whether Ireland will be sending a new batch of troops to a UN peacekeeping mission in Syria.

Minister for Defence Simon Coveney will make the announcement in the Dail this evening, after a decision was made on Ireland's future role within the mission at Cabinet today.

The decision follows an incident last month where Irish troops exchanged fire with militant rebels linked to Al-Qaeda.

The government had demanded an urgent review of the mission in Syria to make sure that UN peacekeepers did not become embroiled in the country's Civil War.

But last week the UN Security Council stopped short of ordering any major review of the future of the mission in the Golan Heights.
