Couple who met online jailed for smuggling cocaine in shoes

A couple who met online have been jailed for trying to smuggle cocaine into the country by hiding it in the soles of their shoes.

The pair were caught after stepping off a flight at Dublin Airport in April.

Gerly Juarez claimed her lover Kingsley Edward bought her the shoes and told her to wear them as they set off for a holiday in Ireland.

Edward, originally from Nigeria but with UK citizenship, wore an identical pair himself.

They were arrested at Dublin Airport's Terminal 1 after touching down on April 15 and were searched on suspicion of trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

More than half a kilo of cocaine, worth just under €40k, was found in Edward's shoes. A little less than €30k of the drug was found on Juarez.

A third person wearing similar cocaine-packed shoes was also arrested but is yet to be dealt with by the courts.

Kingsley Edward has already served a jail sentence for a similar offence in the UK. He was jailed for three years for his part in this operation.

Juarez, a Costa Rican mother of three was sentenced to five years with the final four were suspended.
