Councillor: Love Ulster march in Dublin will 'probably' turn violent

The Dublin Councillor behind a move to block a Loyalist parade in the city says it will "probably" turn violent.

Jim O'Callaghan is asking City Councillors to back a motion opposing the 'Love Ulster' march scheduled for later this month.

It is being planned by prominent Loyalist Willie Fraser who is unhappy the Irish Government asked the European Court of Human Rights to re-examine the case of the 'hooded men', who say they were tortured by British soldiers.

The route would take hundreds of marchers down O'Connell Street towards Leinster House on Kildare Street.

Councillor O'Callaghan says Mr Fraser has a bad track record when it comes to organising marches in Dublin.

He said: "People may recall that in March 2006, the same man organised another Love Ulster march that resulted in a lot of violence, in fact 14 people were hospitalised.

"So I don’t think we need another provocative Love Ulster march in the city.

"It's going to eat up a lot of Garda resources, it's going to probably result in some violence on some streets, and as well as that, it's going to damage some businesses in the centre of Dublin."
