Councillor campaigns for VAT reform
There is "no rhyme or reason" to Ireland's VAT system, according to a councillor who is spearheading a campaign for VAT reform.
Brian Collins has been outlining the anomalies in the current system, under which insulin incurs 23% VAT, while sugar is VAT free.
Other examples include Irish dancing being charged 23% VAT, while ballet is at 0%.
Brian Collins, who is a Labour councillor in Kells, Co. Meath, said he is not seeking the abolition of VAT, but rather a comprehensive reform of the system.
Mr Collins said: "Part of it is governed by the EU, but what is in our discretion, we haven't used our discretion and that is what I am looking for.
"I am not looking for a cut in VAT, although you can see that the 9% in the new tourism incentive rate, that has actually created jobs and protected a lot more.
"So targeted VAT cuts can actually help."
