Cork work syndicate picks up €500,000 EuroMillions cheque

A group of Cork workers picked up a winning EuroMillions Plus cheque for €500,000 at National Lottery offices in Dublin this afternoon.

The 20-strong group of workers from Janssen Bio’s Maintenance Department in Cork, who have played EuroMillions together every week since 2007, won the EuroMillions Plus draw on Tuesday, April 28.

Up until then they have had small wins but a couple of changes in the last two months may have brought them their luck, as syndicate spokesperson Tim O’Regan explained today.

“We’ve played EuroMillions every week since we started but only began to play for the Tuesday draw as well as the Friday draw just two months ago,” he said.

“And wasn’t Tuesday our lucky day! Around the same time, a new person joined the group – Hugh Keating– some of the team are referring to him as our lucky charm!

“Before Hugh joined the most we’d each win in the year would be about €40. Now we’ve won €25,000 each!”

The win is a delight for the pharmaceutical maintenance workers as many have young families.

Aged between 31 and 47 years of age, 16 of the group are married with young families and two are engaged to be married, with one wedding planned for next year.

The group collectively have 28 children ranging from new-borns up to a 16-year-old, and there are a few babies on the way too!

“We couldn’t be happier about the win,” smiled Tim.

“It will come in handy with a few weddings coming up, and there are plans for home improvements and saving for home deposits. There are lots of happy homes in Cork!”

The lucky syndicate bought their €96 Quick Pick Multi Draw ticket in SuperValu, Main Street, Carrigaline, Co Cork on Friday, April 3, 2015.

Tomorrow’s EuroMillons jackpot is an estimated €50m.
