Cork man changes plea in murder trial

A Co Cork man has today changed his pleas mid-trial and has admitted murdering his neighbour in Youghal before stealing from the man's apartment and setting it on fire.

William O'Leary, with an address at North Main Street told gardaí he "lost it" and used a knife and metal punch tool to inflict 90 wounds on Michael O'Shea on January 13 last year.

The Central Criminal Court heard he was in a drunken and emotional state following a row with his ex-girlfriend about their child.

The attack happened over a disagreement with his neighbour Michael O'Shea, who he approached for the use of a mobile phone.

He has been sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to life in prison for murder.
