Cork conspiracy-to-murder probe: Man's detention extended

A man in his 30s, understood to be a former politician, who is being held by gardaí on suspicion of conspiracy to murder has had his period of detention extended.

The man, who is being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, appeared in court in Cork this morning.

Officers are investigating an alleged plot to kill a garda, a revenue official and an accountant. It is understood these targets had been probing the man's business activities in recent months.

It is thought a second man who was approached to carry out the assassination attempts told gardaí about the plot.

Officers then set up an undercover operation that led to the man's arrest.
