Cork city to see closure of four Garda stations next week

Four Garda Stations in Cork city will close to the public next week.

McCurtain Street, Mallow Road and Rathduff are all to close their doors next Thursday with Barrack Street to follow shortly afterwards.

Chief Superintendent Michael Finn of Cork City has said there will be no reduction in the Garda service provided in the area as a result of the closures.

Chief Supt Finn said: "The decision to close the four Garda Stations was taken to maintain a visible Gardai presence in the community. My priority is to have Gardaí patrolling Cork city to protect the public we serve."

Superintendent Barry McPolin, of Anglesea Street station said: "It is important to emphasise that Gardai from Barrack Street Garda Station will continue to patrol the Barrack Street/UCC area.

"In partnership with Cork City Council and UCC, we are progressing a CCTV project to improve the safety of the local community."

Members of the public in Cork city are being invited to attend a series of public meetings which will be held next week.

The meetings will be held at:

Grenagh Community Hall, 8pm, January 24, 2013

Boule 1, University College Cork, 7pm, January 30, 2013

Blackpool Shopping Centre, 12 noon to 4pm, January 25, 2013
