Gardaí in Cork city have launched an investigation after an assault which has left a man in his hospital with serious head injuries.

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a man in Cork city overnight.

Gardaí in Cork city launched an investigation after the assault, which has left a man in his hospital with serious head injuries.

Its believed the assault happened on Ballyhooley Road near St Luke's sometime before 1.10am when a man, in his late 20s or early 30s was found lying on the ground.

The two men were arrested shortly after 9am this morning in the Mayfield area of the city. They are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene has been cordoned off and Garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination.

Officers have yet to establish the identity of the victim and anyone with any information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station.
