Container ship back on course after engine failure

The engines have been restarted on a huge container ship which was drifting off the Cork coast for almost 12 hours.

The 292m vessel, Atlantic Companion, has now set a course for the shelter of Bantry Bay where it will anchor to carry out repairs.

The 57,000 tonne vessel is not expected to arrive there before midnight.

Valentia coast guard is monitoring its progress.

The Swedish-flagged vessel, which was on route from Liverpool to Halifax, lost all engine power around 6am today as it sailed close to Fastnet Rock.

It drifted at about two knots in a north easterly direction for most of the day.

The coast guard was monitoring the situation throughout the day and officers were happy that there was no danger to shipping at any stage.
