Consultants who cleared Neary face probe

The Medical Council has reportedly begun an investigation into the conduct of three leading obstetricians who exonerated the practice of Dr Michael Neary.

Reports this morning said the three doctors drew up reports in 1998 supporting Dr Neary, who has since been struck off the register for unnecessarily removing the wombs of dozens of women.

This morning's reports said the Medical Council had also asked its fitness to practice committee to examine the conduct of anaesthetists who worked with Dr Neary at Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda between 1974 and 1998.

Dr Neary removed the wombs of 129 women during his time at the hospital when most obstetricians would only carry out around 10 such operations in their entire career.
