Consultant obstetrician to appear at Savita inquest

Consultant obstetrician, Dr Katherine Astbury, who treated Savita Halappanavar is expected to be among the witnesses to give evidence at her inquest today.

31-year-old Savita died last October, just days after she miscarried her baby at Galway University Hospital having contracted septicaemia.

Dr Astbury is the doctor, who according to Praveen Halappanavar, refused to terminate Savita's pregnancy telling her this is a Catholic country.

Dr Astbury has legal representation, but it was the HSE's senior counsel Declan Buckley who indicated yesterday that she will absolutely deny ever having made such a comment.
