Construction begins on controversial Poolbeg incinerator

14/12/2009 - 08:22:09
Construction on a 600,000-tonne incinerator is beginning today in Dublin despite widespread disapproval from residents and councillors.

Local residents will protest outside the site in Poolbeg for the planned facility, which has been shown to have more than the necessary incinerating capacity for Dublin.

Local Labour councillor Kevin Humphries said it is ironic that Environment Minister John Gormleym who is opposed to the incinerator, is currently in Copenhagen for talks on climate change.

"I was hoping that when Minister Gormley was elected that he would be able to use his office to stop the incinerator going ahead, but unfortunately at this stage he has failed," Councillor Humphries said.

He said residents would gather later to express their "dismay and disgust" at the project's going ahead.
