Competition body seeks end to ESB control of national grid
01/12/2006 - 13:09:26The Competition Authority has accused the Government of not going far enough to introduce proper competition in the electricity market.
The accusation is contained in the body's submission to the Government on reform of the market.
It says the ESB effectively controls prices because it owns the national grid, making Ireland unattractive for energy companies to invest.
The Competition Authority says the Government's proposals for liberalising the market won't do anything about this ESB control, while consumers will have to continue paying for 'bureaucratic red tape' and power supply will not keep pace with demand.
It is calling for the ESB to be split into a number of competing groups of electricity plants and for control of the national grid to be taken away from the company.
