Communications Minister: RTÉ has questions to answer on 2fm

The Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte says the RTE board has questions to answer about whether it should sell 2fm.

The Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte says the RTE board has questions to answer about whether it should sell 2fm.

Mr Rabbitte says the broadcaster is "very defensive" about the station - which suffered losses of €13m between 2010 and 2012.

The Minister has refused to give his own opinion on whether the station should be sold, but he says 2fm was set up in a different era and questions need to be asked about its future.

He said: "I'm a bit reluctant given my position to express personal opinions - but I think the broadcasting environment at the time when 2fm came into existence was very different.

"Does 2fm do something different from - or better than - the alternative options?

"That's a question I think that does require to be asked."
