Communications Minister concerned about 'undue share of media ownership'

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte said today that he would be concerned about anyone having an undue share of the ownership of Irish media.

Pat Rabbitte made the comments following the resignation of Gavin O'Reilly as chief executive of Independent News and Media yesterday.

The resignation followed disagreements between the company and its biggest shareholder Denis O'Brien.

A new Competition Bill is due to be published soon, and Minister Rabbitte said that diversity in Irish media is an important consideration.

"I would be concerned about anybody, or I would be concerned about any one undertaking, that managed to get their hands on an undue share of ownership of the media of this country," he said.
