Commission reports 350% rise in data security breaches
There was a 350% increase in data security breaches last year, according to the Office of Data Protection.
Up to 410 instances were reported to the Office of Data Protection Commissioner in 2010, up from 119 in 2009.
The Office's annual report said this is because of a revised Code of Practice rather than an increase in the number of security breaches.
The Data Protection Commissioner has has criticised the use of CCTV in schools.
At the publication of its annual report this morning they outlined one case where a secondary school in Co. Kildare had installed cameras in student toilets.
The students objected to the intrusion and the school was ordered to remove the cameras as they were in breach of the Data Protection Act.
The Data Protection Commissioner also said the use of CCTV to monitor employees is rarely proportionate to the benefit it provides the employer.
