Commission denies contradicting its advice on referendum

The Referendum Commission has denied giving contradictory advice about the impact of the Marriage Equality Referendum.

The Referendum Commission has denied giving contradictory advice about the impact of the Marriage Equality Referendum.

A spokesman said remarks this morning by Justice Kevin Cross did not contradict comments made in a newspaper interview last week.

The Mothers & Fathers Matter group, advocating a No vote, says it is contradictory to say that the referendum is not about surrogacy, while also saying it would limit the ability of the Oireachtas to give preference to opposite-sex couples.

The Commission says that, while the Oireachtas would need a fact-based reason to discriminate against same-sex couples in areas like surrogacy, it would not be impossible to do so.
