Collins: Property tax the rock govt will perish on

United Left Alliance TD Joan Collins says she would still boycott the property tax, even if she risks losing her Dáil seat over it.

According to the Sunday Times, TDs who don't pay the levy could lose their seat if they are re-elected, and may have the tax deducted from their Dáil salaries.

Deputy Collins says the only way she would agree to pay the tax from July, is if the people of Ireland can accept and afford it.

She says otherwise, she will continue to boycott it, regardless of the consequences: “At the moment my clear decision is to not comply with this registration or the payment. I will continue to do that until the point that people say ‘No Joan, you’re better off not doing it unless we have the country behind us’.

“But I don’t believe that’s going to be the case. I think it’s the rock this government is going to perish on.”

Meanwhile, the revenue commissioners have published an online guide indicating how much property tax householders will be liable to pay.

The guide - which is now available on their website - provides average values for different types of homes - based on how old the house is, and the average price in the area.
