Latest: Body of man found in second car in River Lee identified

Update 2.35pm: The body of man found in a second car which was located during a search of the River Lee in Cork is understood to be that of missing man Douglas Twomey.

A public appeal was launched yesterday to find Mr Twomey, who was last seen in the early hours of May 3 at his home Passage West, Co Cork.

Gardaí confirmed earlier today that Mr Twomey’s body had been found.

Update 1.05pm: Gardaí have said a body has been found in a second car which has been located during a search of the River Lee in Cork.

Members of Mallow Search and Rescue were contacted by Cork City Fire Service at 6:15am to attend the first incident and dispatched divers from its base in Mallow.

A search co-ordinated by Valentia Coastguard located the first car.

A second car with a body inside was found a few hours later.

Mallow Search and Rescue divers were on hand to assist in the recovery operation that took place.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Update 11.05pm: The Valentia Coast Guard has said it did not find anyone in the car which drove into the River Lee this morning.

Search teams, including divers, located the vehicle upside down under the water earlier, however there was no one inside.

The alarm was raised by members of the public who saw the car enter the river beside Lee Rowing Club at around 6am.

Authorities are now trying to contact the registered owner of the vehicle to determine if it was stolen.

Earlier: A search is under way after a car went into the River Lee.

Emergency services could not confirm if anyone was in the vehicle after gardai alerted the Valentia Coast Guard to the incident in Cork city shortly after 6am on Friday.

It is understood a member of the public saw the car in the river with the bonnet submerged and the boot sticking out.

A Coast Guard helicopter was sent to the scene along with a search and rescue team from the RNLI unit based in Crosshaven.

A Garda spokesman said the incident happened near the Lee Rowing Club.

The river would have been about 16ft (5m) deep at the time in the area where the vehicle was last seen but the flow is expected to increase over the next few hours as the tide goes out.

The RNLI lifeboat crew was anchored at the spot where the car was last seen and a dive team was due on site.
