Carol Hawkins, of Lower Rathmines Road in Dublin denies using 181 cheques to steal €2.8m from the musician's bank accounts between 2004 and 2008.

The U2 bassist has denied giving consent to Hawkins to write cheques to herself from his bank accounts.

The housekeeper turned PA's purchasing role was to buy cornflakes not art or furnishings for his Dublin estate, he told the court yesterday.

He says he trusted Hawkins but always thought his accountant Gaby Smyth was monitoring her bookkeeping.

He gave evidence he was absolutely amazed when in 2010 gardaí showed him very large cheques signed by Hawkins made out to her from his account.

He said they were the kind of cheques even he would have thought twice about signing.
