Clare swimmer dies after getting into difficulty

A man has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Co Clare this evening.

A man has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Co Clare this evening.

The victim, believed to be 50-years-old and from Ennis, was swimming at Whitestrand at around 5.30pm when he was taken from the water by a lifeguard.

The lifeguard, assisted by others, carried out CPR on the man until ambulance paramedics arrived.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter airlifted the casualty to University Hospital in Galway where , gardaí have confirmed, he was later pronounced dead.
