Customs officers have seized 250,000 cigarettes and two motor vehicles at Dublin Airport.

The operation was carried out as part of a crackdown on a gang based in the North.

The cigarettes were seized from 19 passengers who arrived on a charter flight from the Canaries at about 3am this morning and the vehicles were detained as they left the airport.

Customs officers say the cigarettes are valued at €94,000, while the potential loss to the exchequer is just over €73,500.

Since the start of the month 1 million cigarettes have been seized at Dublin airport, while 38 million were seized last year.
