Legislation expected to be passed this October will mean cigarette packets will show graphic images in the latest attempt to scare smokers out of their habit.

The images to be used include diseased lungs, babies on ventilators, and blackened teeth.

A European directive provides for the use of the images, but they are not utilised in many EU countries.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said the effect of the written warnings is wearing off, and the pictures will present a much stronger message.

The Government is also reportedly planning to make cigarette manufacturers print the number of a helpline on packs to help smokers kick the habit.
