Campaigns urging motorists not to drink and drive this Christmas have failed in their objective, according to reports this morning.
The reports said the number of people arrested in the first two weeks of this year’s festive crackdown on drink-driving was virtually identical to the number arrested last year, despite intensive campaigns by the Government and the gardaí.
Garda figures showed that 519 motorists were breath-tested over the two weeks, compared to 849 in the same period last week.
However, the number of arrests fell by just one, from 549 to 548.
Motorists can be arrested without a breath test if gardaí believe a person is drunk whilst driving.
