A male pedestrian has been killed in a crash in Co Carlow.

Christmas Day crashes claim two lives

A male pedestrian has been killed in a crash in Co Carlow.

It happened last night just outside Carlow town, at Gorteengrone. The 29-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene.

His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem examination is to be arranged. The male driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

Gardaí have closed off the N78 Castledermot to Carlow road in order to carry out an examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the R448 Castledermot -Carlow Road, to contact Carlow garda station on 059-9136620 the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any garda station.

The male teen was taken by ambulance to St James' Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The second motorcyclist, a man aged in his early 20s, was also taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Anyone who witnessed what happened is being urged to contact local gardaí.
