Children at risk of abuse in asylum centres 'unacceptable' say Tusla
The Chief Executive of Tusla has said that it is unacceptable that children in asylum centres are at risk of abuse.
It comes after a Hiqa report published yesterday highlighted fears for safety of children in direct provision.
Some 229 children were subject to referrals over child protection and welfare concerns between August 2013 and August 2014.
In 18 cases, abuse fears were so serious they were notified to gardaí by child protection workers.
Chief Executive of Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, Gordon Jeyes said they will ensure that agreed reforms will be implemented.
"It is not acceptable. It is not good enough. We should have got it right the first time," said Mr Jeyes.
"I am telling you and I will be accountable to the public that we are directly intervening in those areas that if the agreed reforms are not implemented as consistently and effectively as we want."
