Childers: medical cuts are a human rights issue

Independent MEP Nessa Childers is calling on the Health Minister James Reilly to abide by his medical ethical obligations and to refuse to implement any more health cuts.

The Ireland East MEP says Dr Reilly and the government are engaging in "human rights violations" because of their implementation of the austerity-imposed health cuts.

Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Nessa Childers said the call for more cuts to the health service was an attack on Irish citizens' basic human rights.

"We cannot continue to attack vulnerable people and act as if a health service is like any other service," she said. "The who issue must be seen as an aspect of human rights.

"I calling on James Reilly to actually say: 'No, I'm not doing this. I'm a medical doctor. I'm not cutting this money. Enough is enough.'"
