Central Bank to undertake mortgage-debt survey in 2,000 homes

The Central Bank is to undertake a survey of 2,000 Irish households with mortgage debt.
The survey being carried out to identify changes to the income and consumption patterns of mortgage holders since they drew down their mortgage.
The Central Bank governor said the information was needed to scale and target bank policies more effectively.
The research will be used to supplement data collected as part of the Central Bank’s Financial Measures Programme, and to conduct economic research on likely developments in the Irish mortgage market.
Meanwhile, the Central Bank also said today that demand for loans from businesses in Ireland fell in the first quarter of this year.
However as part of the Euro Area Bank lending survey for the first three months of 2012, the Central Bank said credit standards were also tightened for business loans.
Demand for mortgages also fell in that time frame.
