Centra stores under fire for 'Children's Allowance Day Deals'

Two Centra stores in Dublin have attracted criticism for offering cut-price alcohol among products marketed as 'Children's Allowance Day Deals'.

The Courtney's Centra shops in Fairview and East Wall have been distributing flyers headlined 'Allowance Day Deals' and featuring a range of price promotions valid for today, tomorrow and Thursday.

Among the products on offer are 20 packs of Miller 330ml beer for €15, and a '2 for €25' offer on Budweiser 20-packs.

Fianna Fáil Senator Averil Power said she was "genuinely shocked" by the campaign.

"Retailers have a duty to ensure alcohol is marketed in a responsible fashion”, Senator Power said.

“Chidren’s allowance is specifically provided to parents to help feed and clothe their kids.

"Centra’s cynical promotion is insulting to parents who are struggling to pay for the basics and certainly won’t be spending their money on beer.”

Senator Power said she was calling on Centra Head Office to intervene immediately to pull this promotion, and was also writing to the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs, the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland, the Minister for Health, the Minister for Social Protection and business representative groups.

No comment on the matter was immediately available from Centra parent company, the Cork-based Musgrave Group.
