Census shows more than 420,000 were unemployed in 2011

Up to 424,000 Irish people classed themselves as unemployed in last year's census, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Up to 424,000 Irish people classed themselves as unemployed in last year's census, according to the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said the 2011 figures show 19% of people were out of work, an increase of 137% since 2006.

Meanwhile, the number of women minding the home has halved since 1981, while there are now more than 4,000 children in Ireland providing unpaid care.

The CSO studied more than 2 million dwellings across the country in April of last year.
