Workers at the C&D Foods factory in Co Longford are expected to learn tomorrow if any of their jobs will be saved following last Sunday's fire.

Management at the pet-food plant in Edgeworthstown is meeting union representatives today to discuss the future of the company.

However, no public comment will be made until the workers themselves are briefed tomorrow.

Around 500 employees could be set to lose their jobs as a result of the massive fire that destroyed the factory on Sunday night.

Reports this morning said a number of options were being considering by C&D management, including outsourcing certain functions while the damaged sections of the plant are repaired.

There is also some hope that the soft-can area of the plant, which employs 120 people, may be salvaged.
