Cavan man nets €50,000 from €2 paid back by brother

Two Cavan brothers are celebrating after one of them spent €2 he was given by the other on a Lotto scratch card - leading to a €50,00 windfall.

Declan McManus paid pack €2 he owed to his brother Damien, and Damien spent it on a Lotto scratch card, winning €5.

Re-investing that sum, Damien bought an All Cash Platinum Scratch Card - and scooped the €50,000 top prize.

Damien said when he started yelling about the win in the Mace shop on the Dublin Road in Killeshandra, Co Cavan - where both brothers work - Declan thought the shop was being robbed.

He said: "Declan owed me €2 so I got it off him and bought a National Lottery Scratch Card. I won a fiver on that Scratch card, so I thought I’d buy another.

"I bought the All Cash Platinum Scratch Card and scratched it right away, there in the shop - I couldn’t believe it when I saw I’d won the top prize of €50,000!"

Brother Declan, who was working when the excitement was happening, continued: “I was in the office and heard Damien shouting ‘Come here! Come here!’ I thought the shop was being robbed!”

A delighted Damien has big plans for his winnings. He said: "I’ve never been out of the country before, so I’m going to go on my first foreign holiday. I’m also going to buy a new car.

"And I’d love to go to Old Trafford when the new season starts to see Man U play!

"I guess I’ll have to look after Declan as well – he’ll get his €2 back at least!!"
