Gardaí in Co Carlow are appealing for information following a cash-in-transit robbery which occurred this afternoon at the Aldi Supermarket in Bagenalstown.

At approximately 3pm, two men drove up to the entrance of the Aldi Supermarket in a black BMW coupe car while a security van was making a collection.

One masked man armed with what was described as a firearm threatened a security guard and took a cash box containing a substantial amount of cash.

The raiders escaped in the BMW.

Both raiders were wearing balaclavas and gloves at the time of the raid.

No shots were fired and nobody was injured during this incident.

In a follow up search the cash box and its contents were discovered on Dunleckney Road, however, the cash box had exploded on opening and destroyed the cash with red dye.

The BMW has not been recovered.

Update at 10.45pm

Two raiders are still at large after they held up a security van in Co Carlow this afternoon.

The robbery happened at the entrance to the Aldi supermarket in Bagnelstown at around 3pm.

Gardai say two masked men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, threatened a security guard and stole a cash box containing a substantial amount of money.

The cash box and its contents were recovered, but the box had exploded, destroying the contents with red dye.
